The Iraq War Simulation: An Experiment in Progress
Unformatted Document Text:  I will then have the students write two of the three above mentioned papers (all 3-5 pages) that will be required for this simulation: A) a general research paper on the Iraq War; B) a research paper on their Actor; and then later at the end of the simulation, C) an analytical paper analyzing what and why they acted the way they did in the simulation, and what they might have changed if they played again. I will have the first paper due almost immediately (one to two weeks), the second due before the simulation started (in a few weeks), and the third due at the end of the simulation. The first two papers will be graded conventionally in regards to analysis, facts, structure, writing, etc. though I will be looking for some aspects of the simulation in these. Also, even beyond these preliminary research papers, I will assign weekly readings from Newsweek and/or Time to keep the students up to date on Iraq. (McQuaid, 1992) Finally, the third paper dealing with the self- analysis will be very different and I will be looking for two major aspects: details of the simulation (to see if the student had been paying attention to their own and others actions) and critical thinking (to see if the student did indeed learn from their actions and their consequences).
