Collaborative Learning in Course Simulations
Unformatted Document Text:  Van Vechten, 26 IV. FINAL STATEMENT ABOUT CLASS PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CONGRESS SIMULATION This simulation will work ONLY with every student’s firm commitment to participate in every aspect of the simulation. When one person misses a class, entire outcomes are thrown off course (the presence of one Republican or Democrat makes a big difference in scheduling bills, for example!). As already stated above, you are expected to participate in all aspects of the course, by attending all regular class meetings and simulations. Because this is so critical, scheduled simulation days (party caucuses, committee meetings, full session) will be treated like TEST DAYS, and students who miss more than one regularly-scheduled simulation activity will lose all class participation points (and missing even one must be excused!). Your participation will be evaluated on your attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and the quality (and in some cases, the frequency) of your contributions in: - Discussions in caucus, committee, or floor sessions - Written communication with fellow party members, colleagues, etc. You are encouraged to keep in touch via email, and to facilitate such discussion, a member email list will be circulated. When you do contact other members, be sure to copy me so that I can keep track of your participation. I will not share your email or the contents with others. Also, please note (again) that your participation grade will in no way be related to the success or failure of your legislative proposal. However, even if your bill dies in committee, you are still expected to fully participate and deliberate over other proposals. Participation in the simulation comprises the majority of the class participation points that can be earned.

IV. FINAL STATEMENT ABOUT CLASS PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS FOR
THE CONGRESS SIMULATION
This simulation will work ONLY with every student’s firm commitment to participate in every
aspect of the simulation. When one person misses a class, entire outcomes are thrown off course
(the presence of one Republican or Democrat makes a big difference in scheduling bills, for
example!).
As already stated above, you are expected to participate in all aspects of the course, by attending
all regular class meetings and simulations. Because this is so critical, scheduled simulation days
(party caucuses, committee meetings, full session) will be treated like TEST DAYS, and students
who miss more than one regularly-scheduled simulation activity will lose all class participation
points (and missing even one must be excused!).
Your participation will be evaluated on your attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and the quality (and
in some cases, the frequency) of your contributions in:
-
Discussions in caucus, committee, or floor sessions
-
Written communication with fellow party members, colleagues, etc. You are
encouraged to keep in touch via email, and to facilitate such discussion, a member
email list will be circulated. When you do contact other members, be sure to copy me
so that I can keep track of your participation. I will not share your email or the
contents with others.
Also, please note (again) that your participation grade will in no way be related to the success or
failure of your legislative proposal. However, even if your bill dies in committee, you are still
expected to fully participate and deliberate over other proposals. Participation in the simulation
comprises the majority of the class participation points that can be earned.
