Expanding Measureable Student Learning about Congress through an In-Class, Effective Mock Congress
Unformatted Document Text:  5 simple motivation/reward system of fake money called “Bucko Bucks.” I explain how bucko bucks can be won during the mock congress for such feats as convincible acting and role playing, or actually getting a bill passed in both houses. Room Reservations Because the students are physically divided into the two houses for effect, I reserve two adjoining conference rooms (House and Senate) for the exercise. My class periods are 90 minutes, so I reserve the rooms for two class periods for each class. The use of two rooms allows divided space for party meetings, committee meetings and floor votes later in the exercise. It also forces students to “travel” to the other house to search for co-sponsors or visit committees. Student Homework Prior to Commencement of the Mock Congress Students are assigned three homework assignments in advance and due by the class period in which the mock congress begins. The first assignment is for students to read the overview of the mock congress found in my published supplemental text which also contains the paperwork necessary to complete the exercise (Sabo). The pages that contain the entire exercise from my text are printed below as Appendix #2. The second assignment involves an internet exercise to review the profile of the current congress. I have students visit www.thomas.gov for this information. I want them to have a feel for which party holds the majority in each house, how many congresspersons are women, and how much members get paid. The third assignment is for students to use blank forms provided in the supplemental text

Room Reservations
Because the students are physically divided into the two houses for effect, I reserve two
adjoining conference rooms (House and Senate) for the exercise. My class periods are 90
minutes, so I reserve the rooms for two class periods for each class. The use of two rooms
allows divided space for party meetings, committee meetings and floor votes later in the
exercise. It also forces students to “travel” to the other house to search for co-sponsors or visit
committees.
Student Homework Prior to Commencement of the Mock Congress
Students are assigned three homework assignments in advance and due by the class
period in which the mock congress begins. The first assignment is for students to read the
overview of the mock congress found in my published supplemental text which also contains the
paperwork necessary to complete the exercise (Sabo). The pages that contain the entire exercise
from my text are printed below as Appendix #2.
The second assignment involves an internet exercise to review the profile of the current
congress. I have students visit www.thomas.gov for this information. I want them to have a feel
for which party holds the majority in each house, how many congresspersons are women, and
how much members get paid.
The third assignment is for students to use blank forms provided in the supplemental text
