Using PowerPoint to teach the American Government Survey Course

A third source that I employ quite frequently is the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. It has a tremendous number of studies of which two I have found to be very useful. One is a political typology: Beyond Red versus Blue: The 2005 Political Typology http://typology.people-press.org/. Students can take the test and find out where they belong on the political spectrum. I have students do this at the beginning of the semester and at the end and compare the two to discover if there has been any changes in their view of American Politics as a result of the course. Another useful Pew Research Center site is Beyond Red vs. Blue; Republicans Divided About Role of Government - Democrats by Social and Personal Values http://people-press.org/reports/display.php3?ReportID=242. This site divides the electorate into nine different groups: three each for Republicans, Democrats, and Middle. This is a great way to show the complexity of the American electorate. One last point should be made regarding the Pew web site. Like other public opinion polling entities, it, too, covered the 2004 Presidential election but there was one characteristic which deserves some mention. Out of ten polling sites that I visited periodically during the 2004 campaign, including CBS. Zogby, Harris, Gallup/USA Today, NBC/WSJ, ABC/Washington Post, and Battleground, its last result hit the Bush, Kerry, and other vote exactly correct In 2000, none of these got all three right.
