Effectiveness of Personal Response Systems as a Classroom Technology Tool at Clemson University

In this way, the instructor is able to display to students how they have fared from question to question. An advantage of the clicker system is that clickers can be passed on from one student to another so long as both students are not using the clicker in the same class. Two students can therefore share a clicker for as long as they use it in different classes. Thus, once a student purchases a clicker, that students can use the clicker throughout his or her university education. Review of clicker use Like all classroom technologies, if used well clickers have the potential of giving instructors and students a useful learning experience. Generally, clickers have received relatively positive reviews in journal articles and educational institutions. (Fagen et al., 2002) A look at the literature also indicates that physical science education has taken a lead in the use of iclickers in the classroom. During the research for this paper, I came across a disproportionately high number of articles on the use of clickers in physical science education . (See, Su, 2002; Wood, 2004; Herreid, 2006; Ribbens, 2007) Irrespective of the teaching abilities of an instructor, according to Duncan, the attention of students decreases after about ten minutes into the lecture. (Duncan, 2004) Thus, students in classes where the instructor lectures for the entire period are less likely to pick up important concept than students in classes where there are interactions. The 6
