Abstract:

The Iowa Caucuses presented an opportunity to provide students with an experience that could combine engagement in the political process through a full-time (15 to 20 hours per week) internship in a caucus related organization (most commonly one of the candidate's campaigns) with an examination of the way in which our parties choose their presidential candidates. I created a special six-credit class designed to promote "engaged citizenship" by combining these two elements, an internship and a "traditional" class. This paper reports on the results of this class and its success. The internships helped illuminate class materials. The class put the internships into a broader perspective. And the students were both engaged in the process and had experiences that enhanced the likelihood that they would remain engaged in the future.
