Fostering Student Leadership in Tackling Community-Based Problems

Currently, we are planning a Youth Conference at Delta with the goal of enabling students to see the alternative to jail, which is school. I am slowly trying to convince the student leaders involved that it would be a good idea to invite local political leaders. Unfortunately, many seem to be discouraged at the idea of politicians involved in their work. In answer to the questions, “Does working with CPF make you feel more or less likely to get involved in
politics (e.g. volunteering), or has it had no effect?” and “Please explain your answer.”

-More likely. Currently, we are planning a Youth Conference at Delta with the goal of enabling students to
see the alternative to jail, which is school. I am slowly trying to convince the student leaders involved that
it would be a good idea to invite local political leaders. Unfortunately, many seem to be discouraged at the
idea of politicians involved in their work. I try to explain that if politicians know the problems that their
young constituents face, solutions can be created. I hope to further my involvement with politics.

-Has had no effect. Working in the community has shown me some of the more negative aspects of politics.
In particular, the lack of interest shown in south Stockton is disheartening. Though working with CPF has
thus far had no effect in making me feel more or less likely to get involved in politics, it has made me more
skeptical of political players.
