Civic Engagement: The Iowa Caucuses
Unformatted Document Text:  survey, said things such as: “I was able to see things I had only read about” And “I gained a greater respect for the complexities of the whole process, especially for a lesser known candidate.” And “I saw in action the effort to implement theoretical tools for good campaigning.” And “It helped me discover what tools campaigns actually utilize and how their decisions shape the outcomes of the race.” Similarly, most of the papers for the class asked the students to reflect on the readings and other class material in light of their internships and the students consistently applied lessons from the campaign to the theories and ideas found in the readings. These essay topics can be found in Appendix B. 10 The students were more divided over whether or not the class materials enhanced their internship experiences with 53% (9) saying it did, and 47% (8) saying it did not. On the positive side, students said things like: They put things into some perspective. They helped me identify what kind of voters we were truing to attract. And It helped me understand what campaign staffers were talking about when planning strategy meetings. And Some of the readings significantly enhanced my ability to understand the actions of the campaign especially ones concerning campaign finance. But on the negative side, they said things such as: It did not. The internship stands alone as a learning experience. And I found it hard to relate what we were doing in class to what was going on at my internship. 10 Unfortunately, I did not save or make copies of these papers, so I cannot provide illustrative quotes from them.
