Abstract:

CommUniverCity San José is a partnership for service, learning and empowerment between a community of neighborhoods, San José State University and the City of San José, hence the name CommUniverCity. In its first two years of existence, CommUniverCity San José concentrated 21,281 hours of student and community service in these neighborhoods, all based on priorities set by the residents, not those of the university or the city. All the student participation was through service learning projects in classes at San Jose State University--always in collaboration with members of the community and city staff. This paper tells the story of the collaboration, how it was achieved, and the challenges faced. Outcomes assessment, including building social capital, is also discussed.
