A Value Added Model of Service Learning in Political Science Courses
Unformatted Document Text:  the literature on service learning rarely gives attention to the particular skills that political science students can bring to local governments. This value added model of service learning deserves to be examined and operational zed more prominently within the discipline. As non-profit entities, most colleges and universities do not contribute to the tax base that funds local governments. The college may contribute in other ways to the community, but the budgets of local governments remain under funded and thus incapable of conducting many necessary functions. Because of the specialized expertise of our discipline we are positioned to use many of our courses to supplement government agencies with research based community service. This paper provides a preliminary specification of the model and a few case studies of its application. We encourage more detailed consideration and discussion of the discipline specific service that we are capable of offering to government. 23
