Civic Engagement--Large and Small
Unformatted Document Text:  The final step in the needs assessment is to identify courses taught by other universities that may be applicable to the goals of the governance project. The project team searched course offerings of 50 major public universities representing all states to identify courses geared toward state and local government and to public management and governance skills. Table 3 provides a breakdown of course offerings. The table suggests that many universities emphasize structure and politics of state and local government and nonprofit organizations, both of which are essential to any program that purports to prepare public service employees. Courses that emphasize skills and abilities that will be expected of employees, however, are relatively limited in this sample. While it is possible that many of these skills are discussed or practiced in many of these courses, universities like CSUS will need to put more emphasis on skills such as communication, team- building, and interpersonal relationships to truly prepare graduates for entry-level public service employment.
