CommUniverCity San Jose: A Partnership for Service and Learning
Unformatted Document Text:  Committee (NAC). Based on the preferences of the NAC, five projects involving faculty from five different SJSU colleges were selected for fall 2005: civic engagement; community planning; walkability/mapping; college-going culture for schools; and earthquake safety preparation. The implementation of these projects and the development of CommUniverCity San José during the 2005-2006 academic year were facilitated by the part-time executive director and two full-time VISTA volunteers supported by the Health Trust (a nonprofit community benefit organization) and the city of San José. The city provided office space and technology support at a community center in the project area. During their first months of service, the executive director and VISTAs: secured CommUniverCity San José’s first external grant from Pacific Gas and Electric; oversaw the development of the CommUniverCity web page, developed by students in the SJSU Management Information Systems program; approved the creation of a logo, an in-kind contribution from an SJSU alumna; organized 511 volunteers for a day of community service; and assisted in the completion of several service learning projects. (See Table 2 for a list of CommUniverCity projects from 2005-2007.) The structure and membership of the CommUniverCity Steering Committee was also formalized during this time, co-chaired by the City’s SNI Manager and SJSU’s Dean of the College of Education. Steering committee membership included the full spectrum of CommUniverCity participants, including residents, students, faculty, city staff and community institutional or nonprofit partners (The Health Trust, Neighborhood Housing Services Silicon Valley and the San José Unified School District). 10

Committee (NAC). Based on the preferences of the NAC, five projects involving faculty
from five different SJSU colleges were selected for fall 2005: civic engagement;
community planning; walkability/mapping; college-going culture for schools; and
earthquake safety preparation.

assisted in the completion of several service learning projects. (See Table 2 for a list of
CommUniverCity projects from 2005-2007.)
