A commercial strip on a major city street includes the merchants of “Little Portugal” as well as Latino shops and restaurants and a growing number of Vietnamese shops and restaurants. But abandoned stores also dot the streetscape along with large plots of land left vacant by a steel mill and a lumberyard. Five Wounds/Brookwood Terrace is a diverse neighborhood with apparent challenges as well as less obvious strengths. University. San José State University (SJSU) is one of twenty-three California State University campuses—the oldest, in fact, with celebrations for its 150 th anniversary underway in 2007. SJSU is in the heart of downtown San José, a small, dense urban campus in a sprawling suburb-like city. Its 30,000 students mostly live in San José and the surrounding suburbs and commute. With relatively low tuition, SJSU is affordable for most residents of the area. Many students are the first in their families to attend college and for many English is a second language. Asians and whites are the largest racial groups; Hispanics are underrepresented relative to their population in San José and the region. While the tradition of service learning at SJSU dates back to its founding as a teachers college, the relatively recent establishment of the Center for Service Learning in 2000 has encouraged and supported more faculty to integrate service learning into their 3
