CommUniverCity San Jose: A Partnership for Service and Learning
Unformatted Document Text:  When the leaders of the Center for Service Learning met with SNI community coordinators, the city team leader for one SNI area near the SJSU campus was immediately enthusiastic about partnering with SJSU. Dr. David and a team of Americorps VISTA members undertook an investigation of prospective SNI neighborhoods, focusing on school statistics, health-related needs, proximity to campus, socio-economic characteristics, and racial and ethnic diversity. The Five Wounds/Brookwood Terrace SNI – whose city team leader had responded with enthusiasm to the idea of a partnership – was selected based on the research and its location near the SJSU campus. University Partners Comments on CommUniverCity Ideally an urban university enhances and enriches the quality of life in the community. CommUniverCity San José is an exemplar of that ideal; wherein student learning is linked to the service needs identified by the city residents and the results are mutually beneficial. The challenge (as it is in life in general) is to maintain a balance such that the community service provided by the university students meets the authentic community needs, promotes quality learning linking theory to practice and instills in the student an appreciation for his/her responsibilities as an engaged citizen in a democratic society. The CommUniverCity Steering Committee, composed of representatives from the city, university and community, works collaboratively to maintain the balance that ensures the benefits of the partnership for the students, city residents the city and the university. --Dean Susan Meyers, College of Education, SJSU San José State University benefits from its partnership in CommUniverCity at many levels: our students' classroom education is enriched by participation in service-learning; faculty benefit from innovative collaboration across disciplines; and the university as a whole benefits from improved outreach and public relations, as well as the generation of funds through grants and government contracts. CommUniverCity is a wonderful, collaborative vehicle through which the university continues to fulfill its mission of community service. --Provost Carmen Sigler In the spring of 2004, Dean Meyers convened a meeting of City representatives, campus leaders, and community representatives to discuss the Town/Gown partnership.
