Abstract:

The Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences at Dartmouth College provides for undergraduate students a unique combination of curricular and co-curricular programs that serves to promote long term civic engagement by students. The pillars of the Rockefeller model are: 1) the public policy minor, 2) civic skills training and internship support, 3) the First-Year Initiative--a Washington, DC-based summer program designed for students who have completed their first year at Dartmouth, 4) student organizations, discussion groups, and programs, 5) the Policy Research Shop--an undergraduate think tank that serves the New Hampshire and Vermont legislatures, and 6) the Rockefeller Leadership Fellows Program--the capstone experience for seniors. This paper will discuss the interconnections between these programs and will explore the possibilities of replication of the Rockefeller Model on undergraduate campuses across the country.
