The Democratic Classroom: Sharing Power to Improve Learning and Educate Citizens
Unformatted Document Text:  Democratic Classroom 2 Abstract This paper focuses on one of the core strategies of learner-centered teaching – sharing power with students – and shows how this strategy leads to a more democratic classroom. There are two benefits to this strategy since students better learn the material as well as acquire citizenship skills. So if instructors are able to share power, they are more likely to have students who are able to transfer the knowledge and skills they learn in their courses to their role as citizens. The paper contends that faculty cannot ignore the positive effects of power sharing on their students and therefore should emphasize this outcome as a vitally important element of their courses.
