Abstract:

To understand more about the impact of active learning, I created and assessed a class on globalization that incorporated six different active learning techniques: enhanced lecture, large group discussion, small group work, simulations, case studies, and in-class writing. This class was one option for students in a required course in the writing program of a small liberal arts college. It therefore brought an inherently international topic into a course generally taught through the analysis of literature, film or other media in an American context. By incorporating a variety of active learning techniques, the course was able to appeal to and actively engage students with a range of learning preferences, bringing political science and international issues into the general education curriculum.
