Studying Abroad, a "Hands On" Approach to Political Science
Unformatted Document Text:  experiencing first hand what they often only read in books and visit cities, people, that allow them a window into how the rest of the world lives and thinks. Having attempted to highlight the benefits of study abroad in the political science curriculum, a few comments remain to be made: First and foremost, insuring academic excellence is heavy responsibility both to the students and the home universities. Our role is not only to insure students have the required credits necessary for their curriculum at home but also to give students new opportunities to open their minds, learn new tools, experience new opportunities and acquire new knowledge that they will not necessarily have access to otherwise. Insuring academic rigor and integrity away from home is an essential challenge when students tend to forget the “study” in study abroad the moment they get off the plane. Our challenge as educators is to motivate the students to study and learn and take advantage of what studying abroad has to offer. This goes even further in the sense that we must give them tools for careers in a globalized world whatever career path they may decide to follow. As such, within the curriculum we seek to promote cultural and intellectual understanding and exchange. Moreover, while the benefits of study abroad to an undergraduate political science curriculum are numerous as we have set out above; it also influences student’s choices for future study as studies have proven 14 . This is an enormous opportunity and responsibility to spark student’s interest in political science and its various subsections for future generations. 14 14
