Unformatted Document Text:  citizens unless a critical mass among them contributes needed scientific skills to keep the United States competitive in the global marketplace. Others among our globally educated students not trained in needed scientific disciplines, can also contribute in meaningful ways by exhibiting support for sustainable development and global responsibility. These are students who see society as an integrated whole – and as such, they will likely support policies that call for individual sacrifice, but are intended for the common good of all humankind regardless of race, ethnicity or geographic region. For example, tougher environmental policies regulating climate change that presume an added tax or consumption-reduction burden, will be more easily accepted if our graduates view such demands as necessary for a better world – not only in the United States, but in Bolivia, Ghana, Japan and other points far from our homes. If successful, this global learning model will provide a dual purpose – to enhance U.S. competitiveness and encourage citizen responsibility to improve our planet both within, and beyond, our borders. That is the essence of global learning for engaged citizenship. 21
