Teaching and Doing Justice Globally
Unformatted Document Text:  Teaching and Doing Justice Globally for incarnational living. That is, programs emphasize deepening relationships as a foundation for life-long learning in communities of trust, collaboration, healing, development and justice. Two types of relationships are prioritized. SLD seeks to help students grow in their spiritual relationship with Jesus. Also, SLD organizes and educates in programs to develop a commitment to developing healthy and sacrificial relationships within communities as the top priority for overcoming conflict and impoverishment. As a result, SLD employs three critical “High Touch” strategies. One strategy is to biblically integrate all courses across the curriculum of SLD programs. Hence, whether studying economics, finance, leadership or management, students identify and reflect upon biblical scripture and its guidance for the theory and practice of the subject. A second strategy is to have full-time faculty serve as mentors and coaches, advising students in their spiritual development as requested, or necessitated in extraordinary situations. Finally, each SLD program includes a course that focuses on theological foundations for the program and or spiritual formation, in which they reflect spiritually on the challenges and demands of the discipline. Pedagogically, SLD takes a “respectful conversation” approach to establish relationship built on mutual trust… transparency, openness, humility, flexibility (willingness to change) and recognition that different contexts produce different perspectives that are to be respected and accepted as having intrinsic value within their context regardless of whether we agree or disagree” (Heie 2007, xviii). Respectful conversation provides a basis for learning from others, especially those with whom we disagree. The aim, for Christians especially, is to learn to bridge differences, distinctions and borders out of Christ-like love for others. Respectful conversation is thus to honor our common humanity, find common ground about how to live well as human beings and to emphasizes point that learning and living are inseparable. 13
