The aim is to assess whether location and delivery format are critical factors for deepening faith, learning about injustice globally and encouraging social justice activism among students of various national origins. History and Basic Facts Eastern University is a co-educational Christian university of 4000 students located in the affluent “main-line” suburbs just west of Philadelphia. Founded in 1925 as Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Eastern established the collegiate division in 1932 and was chartered as a four-year college in 1952. It became Eastern College in 1972 and then Eastern University in 2001 upon establishing the Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies (CCGPS). The Seminary of the University was renamed Palmer Theological Seminary in 2005. A member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities, Eastern University is associated with the American Baptist Churches. Eastern’s Christian commitment shapes the university outlook and practices. Thus, although a small university, Eastern has set for itself a global vision and comprehensive mission: Eastern University’s VisionEastern University is dedicated to ideas, inquiry and the development of people of faith who will enhance the quality of society and the church. Toward that end, Eastern will continue to expand its formative role in the world as a university in which knowledge and wisdom are imbued, Christlike engagement is inspired, and stewardship is modeled. Eastern University’s MissionEastern is a Christian university of the arts and sciences dedicated through teaching, scholarship, service, spiritual formation, student development and societal involvement to the preparation of undergraduate, graduate and Seminary students for thoughtful and productive lives of Christian faith and service. 3
