Model Capstone Exercise to Incorporate Global Perspective into Amer Gvt GE Courses
Unformatted Document Text:  several American domestic and foreign policies as well as the assumptions upon which they are based, the influence of mass media, socio-political movements, interest groups, corporations, political parties, campaigns and elections have on American politics. Student learning outcomes also increased, according to this attitude survey, in students’ ability to express fundamental concepts associated with American politics in writing, their ability to think critically about the theory and practice of American politics, and to express such an analysis in writing, as well as their understanding of how individuals can make a difference in their local community and the nation as a whole. Introducing the Assignment Although the assignment is introduced and discussed at length in the first class meeting, actual teams are not established until week three, correcting for the greater percentage of inevitable drops. With week one serving as an introductory meet and greet, and lectures two and three covering modern ideologies and core foundations of Classic Liberalism, week three begins the text driven lecture on the Constitution. It’s at this point, then, that students are better able to understand the structure of the overall course, and see the place of the exercise in the context of the whole. Students are encouraged, prior to team assignments, to approach the instructor with any special interests or concerns in the expected areas of study, allowing for individual interest, family history, or curiosity. Students are given the assignment description, enclosed, at the first class meeting, and encouraged to begin thinking about the assignment in general.
