Structuring a Department-Level Assessment Regime
Unformatted Document Text:  24 Rules of writing learning outcomes  Desirable characteristics of learning outcome statements:  Learning outcome statements should be clear and specific in their meanings to faculty within the discipline.  As much as possible, learning outcome statements should be observable and measurable.  Each learning outcome statement should express one course expectation. Multiple objectives and expectations within the same outcome statement often lead to measurement difficulties with both scope and time commitment.  Learning outcomes must be rigorous, reflecting the expectations of a college level course, yet reasonable given the abilities of the student population.  Learning outcome statements should be considered significant within the context of the discipline/program and to internal and external stakeholders. For example, learning outcomes should be consistent with the mission of the college (internal stakeholder) and important to the community at large (external stakeholders).
