Abstract:

Transnational Islamist Militancy consists of a number of very different phenomena with very different backgrounds. The individual Islamist phenomena constitute the components of an emergent transnational phenomenon. Using complexity theory this paper examines the dynamic relation between the individual Islamist Militant phenomena and Transnational Islamist Militancy. Transnational Islamist militancy functions through scopic global microstructures, allowing individual Islamist Militant phenomena to find and correlate with each other. The correlation of Islamist Militant phenomena mean that there is a positive feedback mechanism of Islamist Militancy giving a comparative advantage to individual Islamist Militant phenomena over other contestant phenomena in their environment. Transnational Islamist Militancy is resilient because even though it depends on the continued success of individual Islamist Militant phenomena to maintain the critical mass necessary for it to function, it does not depend on the survival of individual Islamist Militant phenomena. Rather the continued adaption of Transnational Islamist Militancy depends on the temporal nature of individual Islamist Militant phenomena.
