Recent projections of global energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions, and observations of the climate system over the past few years suggest that changes may be occurring more rapidly than the most pessimistic scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Emission reduction programs and commitments on a global scale, as indicated at the recent meetings in Bali, are not yet sufficient to reduce the impacts of climate change in coming decades. For coastal zones, accelerating sea level rise, more intense storms, and heavier rain events are beginning to add to the more direct impacts of temperature rise. Recent trends are described and some suggestions are made for increasing the resilience of coastal areas and communities.
