Unformatted Document Text:  Korean voters’ issue voting behavior in the 16 th Korean presidential election Seoul National University Ji Yeon Hong 1. Introduction Korean elections had been strongly influenced by regionalism after democratization. The regionalism is regarded as long-term effect on election in terms that this is a kind of social cleavage. The life span of Korean parties was too short that the concept of party identification cannot be established in Korea. Historically, Korean political parties were easily integrated into new ones and frequently changed their name. Nevertheless in Korea, a special case existed such that the regionalism attributed to form individual voter’s affection towards political party. That means although major political parties apparently changed into a new one, they internally maintained their own identity based on region so this helped to make a close relationship between individual voters and major parties. For the reason that the influence of regionalism was so strong, the short-term effects such as political issues, candidates’ personality, economic conditions and campaign effect couldn’t affect the result of Korean elections.

1. Introduction
Korean elections had been strongly influenced by regionalism after
democratization. The regionalism is regarded as long-term effect on election in
terms that this is a kind of social cleavage. The life span of Korean parties was
too short that the concept of party identification cannot be established in
Korea. Historically, Korean political parties were easily integrated into new ones
and frequently changed their name. Nevertheless in Korea, a special case existed
such that the regionalism attributed to form individual voter’s affection
towards political party. That means although major political parties apparently
changed into a new one, they internally maintained their own identity based on
region so this helped to make a close relationship between individual voters and
major parties. For the reason that the influence of regionalism was so strong,
the short-term effects such as political issues, candidates’ personality, economic
conditions and campaign effect couldn’t affect the result of Korean elections.
