Cabinet Duration in Latin American Presidential Democracies
Unformatted Document Text:  superior to those based on the parliament feature theories. Fragmentation in the cabinet and the strength of cabinet parties in the parliament significantly affects the duration of cabinets. The events process theorists need to pay more attention to the performance of cabinets in important policy areas, such as economy, which is hard to be predicted by structural variables. Economic performance, rather than exogenous economic shock, is the more significant cause of cabinet dissolution. The paper, however, fails to provide theoretical and empirical explanations on the bridge between the two approaches. We need to investigate micro mechanisms that lead to the dissolution of cabinets . The process of cabinet dissolution decided by the president or coalition party leaders should be distinguished from that decided by the parliament. The latter includes vote of non-confidence in parliamentarism and impeachment of the president in presidentialism. Nevertheless, most of the time a cabinet is dissolved by the decision of cabinet leaders; hence, the strategic movements of the leaders should be further analyzed. References 27
