Economic Inequality, Interpersonal Trust, and Support for Redistributive Policies in Latin America
Unformatted Document Text:  23 between high economic inequality, low interpersonal trust, and lower support for redistributive policies within certain segments of the population, especially the well-off, perpetuating inequality and consequently putting democratic stability at risk. The policy (normative) implication of this study is that Latin American governments need to pay more attention to the voices of the poor, and therefore implement firm policies to alleviate economic inequality and with it increase the levels of interpersonal trust. Indeed, cross- country evidence shows that lowering economic inequality through redistributive public policies has a positive effect on the generation of interpersonal trust (Knack and Zak 2002), suggesting that redistribution is key for turning the vicious circle here described into a virtuous circle and therefore promoting democratic stability.
