Hopefully one of your team members holds some leadership position (Speaker of the House, Majority/minority leader in H/S, whip). Write a one page summary on 1] the general duties of this position and 2] detailing what the person holding that position has done/plans to do for the 110 th Congress. Thursday, March 22 Research one House Committee and one Senate Committee [which at least one of your members serves on]. Part 1, give a short description of the committee: how many members, what party, what subcommittees, when they meet, who is the chair, etc. Part 2, do a write up on what they are working on for this term. What bills are they discussing? What have they passed/voted down? Have they held any hearings? Any important subcommittee activity? Two pages total with an emphasis on part 2. Tuesday, March 27 Rules committee assignment. Find two bills which have made it to the House floor for a vote. Look up the Rule from the House Rules Committee for each of those bills. Photocopy those rules. Write a one paragraph summary of what you found. Compare the two. Any thing unusual? Were the rules designed in any way to encourage or discourage passage of the bill? Tuesday, April 3 Find the voting records for at least three of your members of Congress. Using the Determinants of Voting (pp 283-295) write a one to two paragraph summary of your members’ records. What seems to be guiding their voting this term? Tuesday, April 17 Congress and the bureaucracy. Using one Congressional committee [feel free to use the committee you chose for the March 22 assignment or find one which has had lots of activity this term] research what type of Congressional oversight it has engaged in this term.
