Taking Action Against Wrongful Convictions: The Power of Individuals and Innocence Projects

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

A steady stream of exonerations is shedding new light on just how fallible the criminal justice system is. From eyewitness identifications to false confessions, criminal convictions are being re-examined with a more sophisticated eye on what we can do to protect the innocent. The values and passions, as well as the logic, stirred by wrongful convictions have always pointed toward something beyond any individual’s injustice. The chaotic journeys of post-conviction DNA exonerees, with more to follow, are prophecies of long-term pressures to create and sustain genuine innocence reforms. Taken for what they truly are, these exonerations do not themselves solve problems - they help make some solutions possible. This presentation will echo the panel theme of the need to continue to pursue justice and as seen through the efforts of individuals and Innocence projects all over the country, an entire innocence movement is afoot from which reform is possible.
