Without Sanctuary: Art as Protest and Protest as Art

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

In his disagreement with Plato on the nature of Reality, Aristotle asserted that things are only real when they have meaning. So it was for me that racism became real the moment that I saw the Emmett Till photograph when I was fourteen, and his distorted face etched for me, in no uncertain terms, what my life’s struggle was to be. In this same manner, Without Sanctuary is a perpetual post card from the past, a lingering voice of conscience-ness that demands that we perpetually revisit ourselves in a manner that we are always analyzing and measuring the humanity that we are becoming. Just as a traveler on a long journey constantly checking his map, so must we check the map of our history to ensure that we are headed in the right direction. As an exhibit, Without Sanctuary is an example of document becoming art and art becoming protest, demanding that we use history to contextualize as well as evaluate our lives.
