Coding children's event memory reports

Abstract:

Children’s memory for events they experienced or witnessed has been a crucial issue in legal cases. Accurate interpretation of children’s memory as indicated in research findings involves a detailed understanding of coding procedures used in various investigations. In a study on children’s memory for a distressing event, we coded children’s verbal and nonverbal reports using a unit-of-information scoring system, after adapting a coding scheme from previous studies and independently generating some coding rules. All the information reported could be scored as correct or incorrect by the coding system. Consistency in specific coding rules between researchers should be further verified.
