Abstract

This dissertation research will use archival and interpretive methods to examine the formation of a Greek national identity in Greece from 1830-1922. Specifically, this project is interested in investigating what role schooling and education played in shaping a Greek identity. The goal of this project is to present a kind of historical analysis, that has thus far been absent from scholarship on the subject and to investigate how the adoption of a common national history in Greece, with links to ancient Greece, helped in shaping a Greek national identity. Analysis of early Greek textbooks, curriculum guidelines, writings such as opinions, commentaries, government and church legislation will provide materially to the projects historical, social, cultural context. By focusing on these archival materials, this research will contribute to the history of education, cultural and educational policy studies, comparative and international education, national identity formation, Modern Greek history and more broadly European History.
