Abstract:

This paper studies people’s perceptions of women in managerial positions in three countries with different socio-economic conditions: the United States, Chile, and China. Business and economic growth in these countries has brought more disposable family income to “outsource” traditional family tasks, a greater need for skilled people in management, and perhaps a more positive perception of women as managers. Results show that women as managers are perceived less positively by people in countries where there is less acceptance of women as equal to men, where inequality in the workplace is more accepted, and with a lower level of socio-economic development.
