Identity and Representation: Black Congresswomen of the 103rd and 104th Congress
Unformatted Document Text:  Nadia Brown Rutgers University NCOBPS Paper Proposal Section IV University of Congresswomen in the 103rd and 104th Congress enables me to connect legislators' identity to policy preferences. My project speaks to the growing number of women of color in legislative office. This population has been understudied and my contribution to this field will expand the parameters of both Black politics and women and politics. Of the 1,749 women state legislators serving nationwide, 355 or 20.3% are women of color, 237 of whom are African American (CAWP data sheet 8/08). This growing number of Black women legislators, while still undersized in proportional terms, is cause to study the legislative impacts of Black women distinct from Black men, White men, White women, Latinos/as, Asian American men and women, as well as Native American men and women. 2
