Political violence against teachers in Colombia: Understanding the geographies and politics of violence and resistance

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Over recent years there has been a growing awareness of the scale of human rights violations against Colombian trade unionists. According to the Colombian National Trade Union School (ENS) between 1999 and 2005, of the 1174 reported murders of trade unionists throughout the world, 860 were Colombian. What is less well known is that 416 of these were teachers. The vast majority of this violence is attributed to far-right paramilitary organisations with alleged links to the Colombian state. The research is based on recent fieldwork exploring the geographies and politics of this violence, asking why educators are targeted (and where), how this political violence has evolved over the last 25 years, and what strategies the trade union movement has developed to overcome this violence.
