Abstract:

During the height of the Black Power Movement, Black Social Work professionals, intimately familiar with the social and racial oppression that existed in the Black community, were confronted with a dilemma: continue to press for change within existing professional organizations, or separate themselves and organize a national network of Black social work activists whose primary commitment would be to serve, and defend, members of the Black community. In 1968, the National Association of Black Social Workers was born in San Francisco, CA., creating one of the largest nationalist, professional organizations in U.S. history. Self-determining, defiant and controversial, what lessons can we learn from its forty year history? :
