Abstract:

This paper presents a new approach to Chinese instruction at upper intermediate to advanced levels. It proposes a performance-based model with an emphasis on building proficiency through rigorous thematic vocabulary augmentation and intensive productive activities. The rationale is explained. Sample instructional design and student work are demonstrated.
