Abstract:

Researchers have been so concerned with the negative effects of youth sex that little attention has been given to what promotes women’s orgasm and sexual satisfaction in premarital sex by young adults. We analyze the determinants of women’s orgasm and sexual satisfaction in relatively casual “hookups” and in relationships among college students. We use data from a large survey we have conducted (2005-2008) at over 10 public and private colleges and universities, augmented by in-depth qualitative interviews from two institutions. We find that predictors of women’s orgasm in hookup and relationships are similar. Orgasm is helped by more prior sexual experience, more prior experience with the particular partner, sexual practices (such as receiving oral sex, or hand stimulation of genitals by the woman’s partner or herself) that provide adequate clitoral stimulation, and some permissive attitudes. We consider why relational sex is better for women, and attempt to explain the orgasm gap between men and women as well as how it varies between hookups and relationships
