Why Do We Need Decolonial Queer Theories?

Abstract:

Queers of color are compelled to construct queer theories that respond to the ways in which race, culture and citizenship are negotiated. Emma Pérez contends that Chicana/o and Latina/o queers challenge colonialist assumptions and become decolonial critics while devising theories that make sense for various types of queer-of-color communities in which queers mediate various forms of being and not-being citizens. The question is not so much that race or homophobia must be made visible and therefore evident. The real issue is about transforming epistemological and ontological methods to cut through productions of sex, race and gender that appear normative to some and not so for others. To cut through white, colonial heteronormative ideology, that is, to see the unseen, steps must be made toward decolonization. For this paper, Pérez assesses Gloria Anzaldua’s concept of la facultad, Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s alter-native space, José Muñoz’s theory of disidentification, and Maria Lugones’s colonial gender to argue for the importance of decolonial queer epistemologies. These scholars offer decolonial ways of knowing and being that push forward Chicana/o and Latina/o queer methodology and theory. The purpose of putting forth decolonial queer theory is to reflect upon the lives of Chicana/o and Mexicana/o queers on the U.S.-Mexico border who live with contradictions that cannot be explained through more typical queer, urban, progress narratives. In fact, citizenship presents a number of challenges for border queers who must negotiate their rights in daily life.
