Sports Fans’ Use of Facebook Sports Applications: Implications for Bridging and Bonding Social Capital

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This study examined use of Facebook sports applications by college football fans, testing its impact on perceived bridging and bonding social capital. Survey results (N=395) indicated sports application usage had a stronger effect on bridging than bonding social capital. Fan identification, self-esteem and satisfaction with life also impacted social capital levels. Sports applications thereby enhance fans’ social networking experience, providing them an additional way to connect to others, make new friends, and maintain existing friendships.
