Abstract:
|
The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential for intercultural conflict when the explanatory models of the physician and patient are at odds. Specifically, the focus will be on biomedical practitioners and patients in one Midwestern community who use holistic medicine . The first part of the paper explores the ways in which explanatory models shape the health care encounter. The second half of the paper provides an examination of the ways in which the biomedical and holistic explanatory models diverge, and the ways in which the expectations of patients who operate from a holistic EM may not be met in interactions with biomedical practitioners, which may ultimately lead to conflict. The third part of the paper (if the paper is accepted for the NCA Intercultural Dialogue Conference) will be more fully developed into suggested strategies for dealing with such cultural conflicts. |
