Blues Tourism in the Mississippi Delta: Race, Standpoint Theory, and Perceptions/Denials of Exploitation

Abstract:

One of the obstacles embedded in Mississippi’s blues tourism industry is revealed in the disparity expressed by Whites and African Americans regarding the goals, benefits and drawbacks associated with blues tourism. Many African Americans are worried that White blues promoters will be the financial benefactors of blues tourism. In contrast, most Whites reject the claim that they profit from blues tourism. I use standpoint theory to explain why these conflicting and unresolved differences exist.
