The Metamorphoses of the Pygmalion Myth: A Narrative Critique of Lars and the Real Girl

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

How do modern narratives interpret mythology? How do they transform the myths and how do these transformations constitute arguments and reflect values? This paper analyzes the 2007 film Lars and the Real Girl as a retelling of the Pygmalion myth in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Using narrative criticism, I look at how the film interprets character, concluding that the film’s reversal of the myth constitutes an argument for humanism and realism.
