The High Road: A Content Analysis of Newspaper Articles Concerning Medical Marijuana

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Although marijuana has several recognized medicinal uses, it remains a Schedule I drug under the U.S. Controlled Substance Act of 1970. However, since California passed the Compassionate Use Act in 1996, medical marijuana dispensaries have operated throughout the state. Moreover, individuals who receive medical marijuana identification cards are allowed to grow and use specified amounts of marijuana for personal use. The discrepancies between state and federal law have resulted in confusion and conflict regarding the legality of using marijuana in California and other states that have also adopted law permitting its use for medical purposes. The present study reports the results of a content analysis performed on articles covering medical marijuana stories in select newspapers during 2008. Geographical and political differences are reported, and both the socio-legal and public policy implications of the research are explored.
