Relating Counselor Rapport to Therapeutic Engagement in a Prison-Based Drug Treatment Program

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Though the literature on prison-based drug treatment has attempted to offer correlates of successful rehabilitation, one gap is the failure to examine the effect that counselor characteristics can have on an individual’s therapeutic engagement in a prison-based therapeutic community. This is a significant omission, as these characteristics can have an impact upon an individual’s level of therapeutic engagement throughout his tenure in a drug treatment program.

Using a qualitative analysis, this paper examines the dynamic motivational characteristics that enhance or impede therapeutic engagement (the involvement in and commitment to drug treatment) of inmates in a prison-based drug treatment program. Specifically, this paper focuses on the effect that inmate rapport with treatment counselors has on therapeutic engagement.
