Maple Leafs and Eagles: An Examination into Cross-Border Smuggling Between Canada and the United States

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The border between Canada and the contiguous United States stretches approximately 4,000 miles and is characterized as “the longest undefended border in the world” (GAO 2008). The two governments have increased security at border checkpoints; however, most of the US-Canadian border is unchecked, especially in rural areas and on reservations. Along with governmental policies and the demands for illicit goods and services, the largely unchecked and porous border is an attractive target for cross-border smuggling. For decades, illicit and prescription drugs, cigarettes, weapons, currency, humans, and various other commodities have been smuggled across the border. Recently, there has been an increase in methamphetamines and MDMA coming from Canada, while cigarettes, drugs, and weapons are being smuggled from the US. Therefore, this paper examines incentives for cross-border smuggling, including border vulnerabilities, and the various commodities smuggled between these countries.
