IPV Among Adolescent Reproductive Health Clinic Patients: The Role of Relationship Communication

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Population-specific data of intimate partner violence (IPV) is needed on patients at reproductive health clinics, women who are members of the cohort at greatest risk of IPV in the United States. Those studies that have been conducted in such clinics have overlooked the role of relationship communication as a gatekeeper to IPV. The present study aims to fill this gap by providing information to help policy makers, prevention science, as well as clinicians. Secondary data analysis with negative binomial regression was conducted with data from a 2004 survey of 618 women seeking care at an urban reproductive health facility. Findings suggest that verbal aggression by either partner positively correlates with physical violence by either partner, verbal reasoning is negatively correlated with physical violence in most situations, and avoidance is positively correlated with physical violence perpetrated by women.
