Key Implementation Issues of Restorative Justice: Alternative Disciplinary Initiative in Middle Schools

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

As part of a larger whole school restorative justice (RJ) approach, an alternative disciplinary process was implemented in several middle schools in a northeastern state. This paper is part of an ongoing action research project designed to facilitate and evaluate implementation of an RJ program. Traditional RJ knowledge and organizational theory from the field of management were utilized as framework to guide implementation. Three core implementation issues are discussed in this paper: buy-in, trust and cooperation. These issues constitute interdependent processes that operate and must be addressed at both the organizational and individual levels. How each of these concepts was addressed is documented here, including inclusion of other formal organizations, emphasis on cultural sensitivity, the provision of free community and RJ trainings. Finally, analysis from RJ participants, school personnel and community members reveal success and continued challenges with initiative implementation.
