Abstract:

To examine the benefits of integrating research opportunities into the first-year curriculum, fifty-six students in two introductory psychology sections participated in a community-based investigation exploring measures of perceived neighbourhood, while a comparison group of forty-three students in two separate sections in the same semester completed a more traditional course assignment. Students in both groups completed three scales at the beginning and end of the semester measuring interest in research. The research group reported a significant increase in attending to and discussing research, with no change in interest in engaging in research, or in valuing of research. The comparison group showed no change on all three scales. Students in the research group also completed a ten-item questionnaire to assess their experience, indicating that participation increased their understanding of research, that they believed that all students should participate in research, and expressing appreciation for hands-on research opportunities.
